Rod Build # 2

Featured Replies

It's a 6' jigging stick for my brother-inlaws birthday.I'll have pics of the finished threads as soon as they are dry. They're nothing fancy.

I had to strip the wraps on the first attempt on this rod.

Here's the grip section.

Looks like a Batson reel seat w/ green woven insert. And is it a Matrix blank? Hard to tell in a pic, but it looks like it's spiralled so I'd guess not but not sure if glare or pic is decieving. Rod Looks good though.

Flechero,

It's a Matrix reel seat. The rod blank is a Cabelas Fish Eagle II.Sweet little blank for the money.Very stunning in direct sunlight. It has a spiral wrapped butt section.I'll post a better pic of it when I get a chance.

Yep, just as I suspected - very nice!  Love the mirroring of the fore and aft grips.

Are you glueing up & turning that cork yourself?

For this rod I cheated and actually used 2 pre made fore grips and fighting butt EJ.Still had to do some custom turning on them to fit the reel seat and such. He is, just my brother in-law. ;DMy personal rods I'll laminate all my own though. Then dangle them in their faces when we're on the water 8-)

I bought two 2 1/2" fore grips for the upper rear grip and fore grip.I cut those down to meet my requirements. And One 3" fore grip for the butt.Mounted the 3" one with the rubberized cork pointing towards the fore grip. Then added a rubberized butt cap on the end.. Here's a link to what they looked like before I turned them down.

Cheating or not, it looks nice.  The "mirrored" look is a good idea and looks nice.

I bought some cork rings a while back and looking to get a "lathe" put together using my drill to turn them.  However, when I see grips already made up for $9 and see what you did with $7 just got me wondering if its really worth making up my own.  If I were going to attempt some of the really intricate design "boutique" grips I could see turning my own, but, don't think I am going to attempt anything like that.  Really leaning towards buying the pre-made grips and shaping/slicing in two for the fore and aft grips.

Regardless, really nice.  Can't wait to see it when you are done.

Nice rod

Im sure your brother in law will be happy with it looks great

by the way how much does it cost to make a rod like that?? ;D
