Reel Cleaning

Featured Replies

I completely broke down and cleaned all my spinning reels today, next weekend I'm going to give the baitcasters a try. Normally I send them away to get cleaned but I've found a few good youtube videos and I think I can handle it.  Now here my question, all of my baitcasters have Boca os7 bearings that I run dry.  I want to continue running them dry after I clean them, so my question is what do I oil or not oil to keep them dry?  Also what do you recommend I clean the bearings with?  What should I use to get the orange seal off, and how hard is it to put it back in?

nothing huh?

The videos available on line range from OK to practically useless. Just remember to pay attention to your specific reel. I have yet to see one that details what a paid service provides too, so again, use a schematic and your own aptitude to do the job right. Pick the seals off your bearings with a needle point and junk them. The chances of getting them off and back on without them rubbing is low. Clean the the way you would any other bearing and let them dry. That's it. Grease and oil the rest of the appropriately.

I found some videos made by shimano they seemed to be good enough and used the reels I will be working on (curado d).  None of the reels are broken, they just need a basic cleaning.  Thanks for your input.

I just soak mine in mean green for a few minutes. It's just a degreaser. then rinse it off in warm water and dry it.

You can use a thin wire fish hook to remove the seals. Then just throw them away. Soak in a degreaser or even dawn dish soap. Rinse them with water and sit out to dry.

If you are looking for a youtube video for baitcaster reel maintenance tacklejunkie81 on youtube has some really good videos and the best for reel maintenance that I have seen. There is a 3 part video on disassembly, cleaning, oiling, greasing, and reassembly. He does it on bass pro reels, however i have found that most of the reels have common parts and these videos are a good starting point. I recently completed maintenance on all my reels and this really helped to take them completely apart and get a good cleaning. I have bass pro, shimano, and abu garcia reels and I didn't have a problem after watching the videos. Just make sure when you do start to lay out all the parts out in the order you took them off if you haven't done it before as it will make it a lot easier to put it back together. On a side note if you have a shimano reel (since you were referring to shimano videos) when you take the star drag off watch out for a tiny spring and pin and I am talking tiny to fall out it is under the black plastic piece. This spring and pin clicks on the little circles on the bottom of the black piece which is why it clicks when you turn the drag star. Anyways there is a little hole on the drag star where it goes in case you do like I did and put it all back together and see it laying there and have no idea where it goes. I managed to find it by looking up a replacement part diagram. I hope this helps in your endeavors. Tight lines fellas.
