Spooling Up

Featured Replies

I hear so many people say they use mono backing to save money. Can some one please tell me or maybe show a demonstration video of how to do it . I am trying to do mono to braid with a floro leader . Is it possible to spool two baitcaster reels with 150 yd spool of 60lb braid each. how far should i spool the mono so the knot between it and the braid wont show? sorry for all the questions but line aint cheap and i dont want to have to experiment myself! thanks

also i am using an albright knot

Yes, you can calculate how many turns of the handle you must make to get your desired amount of backing. My spool holds 120 yards of line, so I will spool half of it up with backing. With a 6.4:1 gear ratio reel or 28 IPT, its around 50-60 turns of the handle. I will just estimate, because it doesn't have to be exactly 60 yards.

^^^ his way is pretty good but only if the braid you are using is close in size to what the spool holds for mono. They usually use #12 mono when talking about line capacity unless it's a reel with a shallow/finesse spool. You will just have to adjust the amount of backing +/- depending on the braid size you are spooling up with on your reel.

50ish yards of #12 mono backing and 60ish yards of #50 braid works really well. However if you are using something like #65 braid after you spool up the 50ish yards of mono backing you are not going to have the same amount on your spool as if using #50 because it's thicker. So you have to adjust the amount of backing you put on to get the same amount of braid. Same applies for thinner braid. If you spool up with #30 braid after the 50ish yards of mono backing you are going to have more than 60 yards because it's thinner. The long pita way would be to walk out the amount of braid you want on your reel. So walk off 200ft and spool that braid on your reel. Tie your mono to it and finish spooling up until it's where you want it. Tie the mono end to something and walk it all back off down to the spool. Cut and tie the braid to your spool and wind it back on. Now you will have 65 yards of braid and X amount of backing was needed to fill the spool. Once you spool up a few times you learn to just eyeball it.
