Beam Or Scale?

Featured Replies

I ran a search on here and could not find much talk about culling beams. My question is do you folks prefer a scale, a culling beam, or both? I have typically used a scale in the past and am considering getting a culling beam. Pros and Cons would be great!

I use both. When I catch a fish, I weigh it and put it on my smarmtcull tags. After getting 5 I'll weigh fish and if they are close I put the 2 on a beam. Beam is more accurate IMO, but a scale will quickly let you know if you need to use the beam or not.

A quality beam doesn`t lie, nor does it take batteries.

A guess would be that it cost less too. They don`t list +- accuracies on them

With a scale you could weigh  a suspect cull, remember it, weigh the replacement, make the call. Thus you handle the fish less.

I ran in to the issue of culling within an ounce a few times last year. I once tied and questioned a cull afterwords. I'm a fan of knowing the weights though. It gaves me a better idea of what I have in the well (peace of mind).
