GLoomis MB843 Guide Size advice

Featured Replies

Hello

I am looking to build a bass rod casting out of the Loomis MB843 blank.  I was wondering what you though on guide sizes.  I will use 10-15 lbs test on this rod and the manufacturer suggested

12-10-8-8-7-7-6-6-6

I was thinking something along the lines of

12-10-8 (Double Foot)

7-7-6-6-6-6 ( Fly Guides)

Would this work in keeping the weight down without affecting the casting ability.  Also, the spacing will be determined by Static Deflection.  I still get a little confused with guide sizes however, any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

Unless you are going to spiral wrap the rod, I wouldn't use fly guides as they will hold line closer to the blank and cause the line to touch the blank when heavily loaded.

If you are spiral wrapping, put the double footed 8 between the 12 and 10 as a bumper guide and go with the rest as planned. You will be glad you did. JMHO

It will look like this....

Hope this helps.

Because your intending to wrap this blank conventional...

If I were building it, I would be setting a DF#10 for the stripper, then taller SF#6's on out to the tip. Finding the taller SF guides will be the trick here, you need to keep the line up off of the blank when the rod is fighting loaded or static tested.

Good Luck & Tight Wraps!!!!

What kind of guides.... some fly guides are low as mentioned but some fly guides-  like the Fuji TSG or Batson FLG, (and others) are taller fly guides and might work well in a "guides up" configuration.

Yeah

I think I will go that route with a 10 DF and singles after that.

I want to go with Sic guides. Do you know if the LSG fly guides are higher like the TSG

I don't know about the small ones... the size 8 and 10 are tall in all the fuji's I've seen but the 7 and below are different by model.  Maybe ReelMech knows...  I only keep the TSG, TLSG and BLAG fly guides on hand.  I think the LSG is low, the same as the TLSG but I can't verify that.

You might want to price the TSG's out before dismissing them... in the small guides, they are not much more than the steel frames. It's only $0.75 - $2 less per guide, which is why I don't even use the LSG or SG guides.

If I were ordering Sic (Silicon Carbide w/SS frames) guides, I would be ordering the #10 NSG and then the #7 YSG's out to the tip.

This all would be a lot easier with an order of good old Alconite Concept guides a #10 BLNAG10J, and #7 BYAG7J's out to the tip..

Also easier and cheaper would be Hardloy Concepts, a #10 BNLG, and #7 BLVLG's out to the tip.

Just my thinking......  :D

Thank you guys for the input.  Just the fellas I was lookin to get advice from  :D

I went

10 TNLSG, 8 TNLSG and 6 TSG's all the way out.  I may or may not use the 8 Double Foot.

I figured I would probably chase some saltwater species with this rod too so may as well spring for the Ti's.

Thanks you guys!!

Alpster, I love the rod man.  Looks really good, I'm just not a spiral man I suppose.  Did one and was not too impressed.  Maybe just gotta give it a chance!
