Rod Durability

Featured Replies

Hey everyone I have a lot of experience with St.Croix and their rods and know that they are extremely durable, I am looking at some other rods Dobyns in particular and am wondering how durable they are compared to a St.Croix. Thanks everyone!

The durability of any of today's high modulus blanks is largely dependent upon handling practices. Don't bang them around or high stick them and you'll likely not have a problem.

Another tip would be to invest in rod gloves

Thanks for the replies but I wasn't specific enough which is my fault but i'm wondering which will hold up better to accidental wear and tear like dropping them or stepping on them etc.

Just looking over my upstairs rod caddy that has rods (20 or so) as old as 50 years or more. Only a couple are younger than 5 years. Have only broken one rod, which was an old fiberglass UL by Garcia. That happened about 30 years ago and was my fault. I take pretty decent care of my rods and they all hold up just fine. Go with what you are confident in and don't worry too much about durability.

As long as you don't nick the blank by mishandling, you should be good to go. The rods that have been with me the longest are my avids and bps extremes. I hear of some rods having more breaking issues than others, but I haven't experienced it with these. I'm pretty sure a composite rod would be the most durable if you are tough on your equipment, but they are usually heavier and less sensitive.

If you're concerned about accidental wear and stepping on them I'd look for rods with a good warranty. Like others have said, the best thing you can do is take care of your rods.

Always wondered just how long could a rod last if well taken care of? Do heat and ultraviolet rays of the sun have much affect over time, on rods? Some of my rods are from the mid 90's and have spent a lot of time laying out on the rear casting deck in the blazing sun.
