Rod Tip Repair

Featured Replies

I have an Abu Garcia Veritas rod with a tip guide missing an insert.  I have been looking at replacing it and saw that some have different "tube sizes".  I am going under the assumption that the tube size is the hole for the actual rod but I just want to be sure.  more specifically what unit is that measured in? MM? or is it some other value based number relating to some chart?  in addition how tight of a fit should it be?

thanks in advance I know there are a lot of rod builders here.

It should say the size of the guide (5 or 5.5 for example) and the diameter of the tube in mm. It should be a snug fit when slipped on dry without the tip top adhesive. What are using to measure your tip diameter? Calipers work great. Digital calipers are even easier.

Try some different sites if it doesn't show both measurements.

While I always size the tube to the tip dia. when building a rod. I carry over size tip guides in my tackle box with a cement stick for emergency repairs - an over sized tube is no big deal the cement fills the gap, that way I don't have to carry different sizes.

The right way to fit a top is to remove any residue and choose a tube size that slips on easily but is not sloppy. If you measure 1/8" from the tip you should get a good fit. The Fuji kits come with 3 sizes and are pretty inexpensive.

Thank you guys for your replies. I do have a caliper and I will look into the Fuji set. I bought a cheaper set from gander mtn and even the smallest was sloppy loose.

No, that's not right. Tip top tube sizes are 64ths of an inch. They sometimes list a mm equivalent but that would be closer to 2mm

Sorry Mike if I'm spreading misinformation. I was going by the the sizing on the Getbit website. Its the only place I've bought guides from.
