so im not a heavy line person, i only used up to 12# until last year when i used 14# for punching (this not including braid) so i just lined a reel with 17# fluro i was gonna use it for lighter punching but would i be able to use it for a 3/8oz swim jigs around sparse cover? or is that to heavy line?

Yes, 17lb fluorocarbon can be used with jigs just fine.

In that 30 minutes you could of Googled your question and had all the answers you would need. Yes it will be just fine. I fish #16 fluoro all the time. From weightless senkos to 1/2oz jigs

The problem with any forum are too many conflicting opinions, I'll add to the confusion.

What is the point of FC, if it's for abrasion resistance or stealth, I see the need only for a FC leader and not an entire spool.  Personally I do not use FC for bass fishing, mono leaders work for me.  I do use FC leaders for some exceptionally line shy fish.  That said my fishing partner didn't use f/c leaders and our catch rates were about the same, every Saturday for about 5 years.

 

The best answers come from our own experimentation.

Depends on what type of cover and structure are fishng.

 

If in the Surekill, you will need heavier line to reel in the dead bodies.

 

Other waters in the greater Philly area should be fine with 17 pound test to punch through the grass and pads.

 

Please do the following when spooling your 17 pound test onto your reel:  Run the line through a wash cloth right before it goes onto the reel by holding the washcloth by our thumb and index finger and having a "wet spot" with KVD's Lure and Line Conditioner.

 

Soak the washcloth with the Lure and Line Conditioner to help give is some flexibility.

 

Be sure to spool some braid on the spool first and then tie the flouro onto the braid to help stabilize the line on the spool. You can use more braid and less flouro if you want to use less flouro on the spool.

 

To use a 3/8 ounce bait please check your rod's specifications to make sure it can handle 3/8 ounce baits. If so, you are set and read to go fishing.
