What Is A Flipping Switch?

Featured Replies

I have a SHIMANO BANTAM BEASTMASTER BBM-VR 2-SPEED which was passed down to me.  Evidently there is a switch which I have no clue when to employ it..   Can someone help?  Thank you!

First, welcome aboard!

On my two Quantum reels with flipping

switches, when you flip the with, it allows you

to engage the reel when you press the thumb

bar, then when you release the thumb bar,

it automatically goes back to a non-casting

position.

So it is used when flipping and pitching.

Not sure that helps

Hello and Welcome to Bass Resource

A flipping switch is a setting that allows you to hold down the thumb bar and flip, then as soon as you release the thumb bar the reel is already engaged without turning the reel handle. It can save you from losing a fish that takes the bait immediately before you have time to turn the reel handle that engages the reel. I usually leave mine in the 'off' or normal position while flipping and especially while pitching. Some people find a Flipping switch more annoying than convenient. Others always use it.

The flipping switch is a no-brainer that few people ever use more than a couple of times although when they first came out on baitcasters, everyone had to have it.

Thank you gentlemen!

Oh, I wouldn't go that far . . .

Most "Insta-gage" style flipping switches are awkward to use and a weak link mechanically imo. That 2 speed reel is a bear to work on too. I'd retire it to a display shelf myself.

Oh man....I LOVE my original Castaic CA-200 with it's "insta-gage".  Not awkward for me.

The other type of flippin' switch is a bad deal if you forget it's on and try to make a normal cast with it on.  Bad.  And also a PITA to work on too.

Lol, yea I remember that exact reel.. I bought the next version below it. A wide spool version with a sliding switch on top, front hood area, it was a magnetic braking reel. Been awhile since I saw the 2 speed version. Looks to be in good shape.
