Fishing Rod Dilemma...need Opinions Please

Featured Replies

So Earlier in January I placed an order through Amazon.ca (I am from Canada) for a *** *** Rod. I need a Jig rod and I thought this would do nicely it's a MH F 7'1" rod . The total with taxes and shipping came to CDN$ 99.53( $77.95 US). Now it is still on backorder as I expected but I have not been charged for the rod yet. I have the money for the rod but don't know if I really should/want to spend almost $100 on a rod, as I have already spent a lot on fishing stuff in the off season and especially this last month. However, I still need a Jig rod for a Used Revo S reel I had bought. While browsing some websites I came across a Gen 1 Veritas including shipping and taxes for CDN $55.30 ($43.30 US). It is a 6'9 MH XF rod. I figure the Revo S on the Veritas will balacne very well which is a plus with the veritas.

Now my concerns are:

- I mainly fish from the bank but also fish from a canoe/kayak(seated) at times and don't know which length would be best for this the 6'9 or 7'1

- I am getting what I think is a very good deal on the *** which I have heard great reviews on and don't want to miss a good deal

- I have read that people have had problems with veritas snapping at the tip alot and I worry it won't last long or be very durable

- I don't think there is much of a difference but one is XF tip and the others a F tip and I'm not sure which would be best for bank and canoe jig fishing

If anyone can share their thoughts or opinions it would be much appreciated thanks!

It is definitely easier to snap an xf rod tip than a fast tip. Especially in a kayak where you are sitting down when you land a fish. If it were me I'd stick with the ***. Its up to you though. I fished with a 66mxf falcon original out of a canoe for a couple years and swung many 2-3 lb smallies into the boat without the rod snapping. Was that too wise? Probably my not, but the rod never broke.

I would add that BOTH company's are being reported as having stellar customer service on warranty issues. As far as the *** black, I sometimes use my 7'1" heavy/fast pitching jigs..

I like it fine..

You are getting a great deal on the ***.  I believe the Veritas is also a very good deal.  I occasionally fish out of a 12.5 foot Porta-Bote and a 14' canoe.  Not quite the same as a kayak, but I have no problem with longer rods.

Never used a Veritas.  For me the handle on the *** is a bit too thin for one-handed casting, but I almost always use 2 anyway.  It is a great rod at full price.  I do know that most of the Abu rods are under-rated for power.  At least all I have are.

What I was thinking was that the rod length would affect hooksets while sitting in a canoe

You'll need to pay attention with either action rod when you have a fish on a short line. If they make a last surge, give them some room and avoid high-sticking. The durability of either should be fine and any defect will make itself known the first couple times you load the rod. After that, user error comes into play. As for swinging fish, it's a practice I discourage for sake of both the rod and the fish, but if you must just keep the rod as parallel as possible to the water and you'll be surprised at the dead-lift capacity of most rods.

Often the fish hooks itself.  That is because I usually am fishing a moving bait.  My hooksets aren't hard.  I definitely am not standing up in the canoe.  Too narrow and I can't swim.  :teeth3:  I can stand up in my little Porta-Bote, but usually have daughter and/or grandsons with me so standing up isn't a good idea in that situation either.  It is hard to make a side sweeping hookset sitting down.  Especially if someone is behind you.  Mine are normally made at 45 degree to vertical.  Rod length doesn't make a difference for me.

Yes I am generally very aware and careful of my rod position when landing the fish in the canoe even with my ugly stik rod.
