Snagged Bass, Feel Bad

Featured Replies

She was on her bed and snagged her a little in front of her spiny dorsal fin. I am no expert on bass anatomy but I wondered afterwards if I damaged any nerves or anything like that? The hook was in there all the way. She picked up my lure ( 1/16 bitsy bug  ) and must have spit it out before I went to set the hook because when I pulled back I get her where I said. When I saw the snag I just tried to get her in gently but quickly to remove the hook and get her back in the water. The hook came out quickly and I put her back in and she bolted. I did not see her go right back to her bed and was bummed that I might have hurt the thing or messed up its spawn. A little later as I passed that spot I looked and there was a bass that looked like her and was back on the bed and was chasing off other fish ect..like they do.

Obviously that was the last thing I wanted to do. They have enough stress on their beds and I am sure I caused a lot more with my snag. All I can do is hope she is ok but I feel bad about it. It put a damper on the rest of my day of fishing.

So let me ask you this: if you snagged her by her face and drug her around for a few seconds, would that have been less stressful on you? Because I'm sure the bass doesn't care where she's hooked. If you're going to fish, and bed fish, it's going to happen. I hope you find peace.

Did you filet and put in hot grease?  It will be fine.  No worrys

I mean no snag would be less stressful. I guess it depends on where and how deep. Yeah you're right, it happens.

Thanks bro I will. Just a bit bummed and felt like getting it off my chest.

I doubt the stress response is greater from a snag than from normal hooking in the mouth. I'd guess the most likely sort of extra harm from a snag is that there is an increased chance of infection.
