Wide Spool Low Profile Baitcast Reels

Featured Replies

I want a wide spool low profile baitcast reel in 7.1:1.  I have fat thumbs and find a wide spool more comfortable.

I have a couple wide spool Pflueger Trion low profile baitcast reels that I love.  Unfortunately, the Trion is out of production, and wasn't made in the 7.1:1 range.

Can anyone recommend a $100 (or less) wide spool baitcaster in the 7.1:1 range?

I know the Abu reels tend to have wider spools, so I'll probaly check out the Orra SX2.

Thanks,

Patrick

I found the 200E series Shimano reels to have a fairly wide spool. It would be easy to find a nice Citica 200E for under $100.

I believe the Tatula is considered to have a fairly wide spool and it can be found at the $100 mark.

I believe Skeet Reese makes one with Wright & McGill, but I don't know where you'd find one.

I am with you on the Trion.  Still have a few I use in the main lineup of reels.

anyhow, a bit over that price would be the lews BB2z at 169 that I have been buying and they are wonderful.  Also, Ardent makes one that may be closer to your price range but I know nothing of it.

Any of the 200e series Curado/Chronarch reels from Shimano. However they will be a bit out of your range. The Citica 200e has 6:3.1 ratio but will handle a gear swap from a Curado 200e.

I have one but its not wide at all.

Lews bb2, I have one and it is pretty wide.

I don't mean the Victory or Victory II.

Google "Wright & McGill Victory Magnum Casting Reel".

Oh... but its been discontinued for a quite a long time. My choice for the OP would to be just to buy a Tatula off amazon.

Too bad they look pretty sweet.  There are a few on Ebay for $80, but I don't know about buying a discontinued reel on Ebay.

I have the trion and president. I believe the president is still made but probably $150. Pflueger makes other lines they may work. Tackle direct has a trion and bass pro has a lady's trion combo. $69. ?? Could be a great deal if it is the same trion and you are good with metallic baby blue. Just a thought.

Wow thanks for all the great suggestions.  I think I need to head to Dick's, BPS or Cabela's and get my hands on some Diawa Tatula.

I fished a Citica, but found it was kind of narrow, so I sold it and bought the second Trion.

I will also check our Tackle Direct.

Thanks again for the great suggestions!

I realized I might want to check out inshore reels.  They may have wider spools, since they have greater line capacities.
