The bass bite has been tough for me lately. I fish my local ponds almost daily. Sometimes standing out there for 2+ hours, especially the days my buddy doesn't go with me, can get downright boring when not catching much. I figured I'd take a few days off, until Saturday morning, to focus on some gills and maybe a crappie or two. Just a little change of pace.

Tonight I busted out the ol' ultralight, and a 1/8 oz. beetle spin. Thought I'd go out and catch a mess of bream. Wouldn't even take a bass rod with me. Ended up only catching 1 bream, and a total of 12 bass in about an hours time!!! Biggest was about a pound.

Go figure. First time Iv fished with a beetle spin since I was very young. Looks like I'll be using it more often, on the days when I have ta knock the skunk off! Probably put my girlfriend on one also next time she decides to join me.

I don't blame you for switching over to the UL and looking for other fish. I'll do that as well if I feel like it's really going to be quiet as I know the sunfish will always bite.  At least you found another method for connecting with the bass though! I actually just recently bought a couple of beetle spins and looks like I need to give it a shot as I keep hearing great things about it.

 

I will say this though; the longer you go without catching a good fish, the sweeter it feels when you finally do get one. I often go 4-5+ hours with nothing to show for it as I usually stick to the method that I like fishing best. Someone else might catch more fish in the same area using a different technique but when I finally get one man does it feel good. 

I did the same thing last time I went fishin I had only cuaght 1 bass on a shaky head and it was super slow with no other hookups so I threw the bass rods in the car and only took my ultra light down to the lake with a can o worms...first cast I imedeatly catch a decent bass!

I take a UL with me when it starts getting hot.  The bass shut down about 9 AM, but the bluegill go all day.
