Would love to learn how to build my own rods

Never heard of Nepa but Mudhole offers classes around the country.  Check their website.

I'm in SWPA. I don't know anyone out in your area that builds.

Watch some You Tube video's and ask a bunch of questions here.  I learned it on my own and you can too.  We will help you.

Yeah I taught my self from done you tube videos and being me and I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed lol

I'm self taught too, with the help of the internet that is.  It's really a pretty simple process, it just takes a lot of practice to master.  Read all you can on the rod builder sites and watch videos on youtube.  You should figure it out pretty quick.

X2 and I'll x2 don't hesitate to ask questions. My advice. Don't focus in the beginning on the destination but the journey.

Practice and more practice. I still fight with thread sometimes.  There are a bunch of basic videos by Mudhole and Flex Coat on youtube.  Watch them over and over and over.  Then practice.  I would recommend for your first build you use a complete rod kit from either Mudhole or Get Bit.  It will have everything you need as far as parts go and it will all fit.

 

If you can give us your budget amount for tools and supplies we can point you in the right direction as to what you absolutely need vs what is nice to have.

If u use Eva or Winn grip do u have to ream it out? Any videos installing a Aero Comfort grip spinning? Or Skelton grip either casting or spinning?

I like EVA and yes you have to ream it.

 

I don't like the winn grips so I don't build them.

 

Aero and Skelton grips come later.  Don't start with them.  Start with one of the basic cork grip kits.  There are enough things that can go wrong without making it more complicated than necessary.

I like the comfort grip on the spinning rods I have, so I would like to keep my rods the same that I fish with if that makes sense.

If this is the one you like then it's the same as a basic grip.

Ya that would basically be it with no foregrip. What do u use when using no foregrip

Usually a winding check and a trim wrap and an epoxy ramp.

 

 

There are 3 types of winding checks above, Aluminum, fuji graphite nylon, and rubber. 

 

 

This one has a rubber winding check, trim wrap, and a built up epoxy ramp flush with the reel seat barrel.

If I buy the $139 kit what else do I need? Or should I get the $154 kit & what else would I need? Or any other recommendations from other places?

The $154 kit is the most comprehensive one I have seen.  If you are only going to build a few rods then that is probably all the tools you will need.  That is probably enough supplies to build two rods.  After that you will need more epoxy, finish, mixing cups, mixing sticks, brushes.

What is the easiest way to line the guides up & also reel seat?

Best way to align the guides is to sight down the rod and move them as necessary.

If you decide to continue building, it will become an affliction. I just added a 1hp Grizzly bandsaw to my arsenal of tools. Next thing I'm gonna add to the shop is a small metal lathe.

Harbor freight has a table top mini lathe that I have been looking at. I don't need it but that never stopped me before.
