spinning guides

Featured Replies

As a general rule when building bass spinning rods is it preferred to use standard or high frame spinning guides. On a RX7 or RX8 822.5 I was thinking using Alconite guides. Should I use BYAG high frame spinning guides or BLVAG spinning guides? I was going to start with a 25, 16, 8(adjusting sizes as needed) finishing the rod with size 5 or 6 fly guides

I typically use BYAG, but measuring the thes spool face diameter of the intended reel, should help answer your question.  The rule of thumb is to use the smallest guide possible, that can/will perform the task that is being requested.  I think your on the right track, just select your butt guide based on your spool face measurement, to start.  After that, reduce/increase the size and check for line slap, moving the butt up and down the blank a small degree.  For me, experimentation was key to both learning and understanding the interaction of the rod components.

For your application, I would probably end up using 3 BYAG's, #6 BLAG's for running guides and a #6 BFAT.

My best suggestion for spinning rods is to buy a complete set of BYAG's for the set up... 30,25,20,16,12,10,8 and then either replace what you end up using or return the rest if you aren't going to build more rods.

I made the mistake of pre-selecting guides on my first spinning rod and didn't get what I needed so I re-ordered what I thought I needed and still missed the one guide I hadn't already bought. ...lol In the end I spent more in postage than the rest of the guides would have cost on the first order.

And read Tom K's article for a good overview (except this one statement: (Generally, lines from 2lb to 8lb will easily pass through a #6 ring. 10lb to 15lb lines may require a #7 or #8 ring size.)

We use #6 guides for mono lines up to #25 with no trouble.

I was going to buy a whole set of sizes, but did not know what guide style to get. BYAG or BVLAG.  The problem has since been fixed.  I called Darrin from AMTAK after he posted on  my RB.org thread. I asked about the difference between duralite and nanolite.  He offered to send me  some of the larger sizes in the Ring-lock nanolite a-frame, letting me buy smaller sizes.  He was very nice to talk to and took plenty of time to explain his guides to me. Now I just need to decide on the RX8 or RX7 822.5 blank.
