Spun Hub?

Featured Replies

If my hub is spun would it still work in reverse? If i pull boat out of water put in gear it spins just fine, but when under pressure wont take off. Will just barley push you.

It's obvious that the prop cannot handle the resistance of the water.

When it comes to reverse you need to keep in mind that a propeller is designed to be operated in forward, and provides much more thrust, and therefore, more resistance to turning than it does in reverse.  It may operate to some degree in reverse, only because reverse does not produce as much resistance to the prop turning.

id start by taking the prop off and checking the splines on the prop and shaft; go from there.

Spun hubs are rather common. I've spun more than my fair share. The last one I had done was $75 in a 28" Raker.

You probably won't be able to spin it by hand it you try, there is still a lot of resistance on it, it's just can't handle the load the water is putting one it when you put power to it.

Sounds like a spun hub to me, but you won't know for certain until you take it off and have it checked. Basically when spun, most will work fine in forward or reverse at just idle speed, but the minute you try and gun it, the prop slips and you don't go anywhere. Relatively simple and cheap fix. Always carry a spare prop and tools to change it onboard just for such situations.
