Painting Hooks

Featured Replies

Is it a bad idea to paint the hooks? I have some that I would like to paint red. I am a little worried about poisoning the fish though.

Is there a paint that won't harm the fish when the hook penetrates.

That sounds funny to ask. I want to make the fish bite a sharp object hard enough that it can't get away but I'm worried about the paint hurting it!  ;)

Any thoughts or does it really matter?

Personally I believe red hooks are over-rated. I did not notice any difference in fish hits. I used to dye mine with a product called Spike-it blade dip. It's not paint. If you cant find what you want I have plenty left over.

I have some Jigs that need to be painted and some of the hooks are a tad rusty. My dad gave me an old tackle box with a bunch of older jigs in it. I'm going to sand the hooks down and sharpen them. I thought the paint might help keep them from rusting. I thought if I'm going to paint them I might as well paint them red.

In stead of doing that I would buy new jigs, if the hooks are rusty they have a good chance of breaking, therefore doing worse damage to the fish that any paint you put on there.

I agree with guitar kid. Plus if a hook breaks on a big fish you'll have the heart-ache as well. If funds are a problem for you, I'm sure there are plenty of guys on here (myself included) that have extra tackle they don't use. Might be willing to part with it for very little $.

Throw them away, their physical integrity cannot be trusted.
