Custom Fishing Hooks?

Recommended Posts

This is my first post here so I'll start off saying my name is Roy, been building my own rods and occasionally will mess with making spinner baits and whatnot.

Anyhow, I came up with an idea I'd like to try out. Problem is I don't know where to start. Seems to be a endless problem with this hobby lol. Basically wanting to know if anyone makes their own hooks? Talking about making and shaping everything, from the eye to the barb. If so what kind of process do you go through, where do you get the materials, and if there's a type of machine for this that doesn't cost a arm and a leg, what is it? Even if you built your own lil set up I'd like to see it. Might give me an idea of what I need.

Your request is too costly for the average guy. Even if you wanted to make hooks, you have to buy the correct temper wire, then you have to have a machine to make the hook eye, then bend of the hook and then put on the point. You have to have a way to sharpen the point next. Now you have to harden the steel to the correct temper, so it's not too hard for it to break, and not too soft so it opens up. Finally you have to then get them plated so the steel won't rust. Hardening is a process, that you would have to establish, on where you want your hook to be. This is not practical for the average person, sorry to say. If you are looking for a custom hook, you can call one of the big hook companies to make you a run of 10K. They will have all the answers for all of your questions.

Welcome to the forum, back when I was younger I made a few because I was a survival nut but only made them out of nails and what not lol. I think there's a reason why hooks are so pricey and manufacturers only profit because they pump them out in the hundreds of thousands. I'd imagine to get a setup just to make a few hundred hooks you can have enough money to buy what hooks you need for life lol
