Not absolutely necessary, but they sure make life easy.

If I only need 1 or 2 what size, trying to keep everything to bare minimum to start, putting my list together

The two middle ones in that kit will handle most blanks

It really depends on the blanks you expect to use. If you're really going cheap out of the gate you can use rat tail files from your garage. 

when and if you use reamers in a drill be SURE to know which direction you need to be turning reamers or you can sure turn the sanding tape off in split second. I bought a set of four reamers long ago now have five- one to replace the one I turned tape off - in split second! great tool for rodbuilding. used rattail files long ago- they worked, but reamers are so much more efficient- much better results.

I've been using the 7 dollar ones from Mudhole in the xsmall, small and medium. And that's covered the bass and pan fish blanks ive done

we have a complete kit as well. You can do it by hand, but most of us either mount them to a drill press or hand drills.
