Mono Vs. Fluoro Vs Braid

Featured Replies

After using 10lb Strenn Mono my entire life, I'm trying to break away. I use that with senkos and topwaters[which is mostly what I use] on my 6'6 MF.

Then, without reading into it much, I purchased 12lb Strenn Fluorocarbon for my 6'6 MH rod. I will use that rod in cover, however--I'm realizing I don't like Fluoro that much. Is PowerPro my best bet for braid? Also, what # would be best...20#?

I want to fish shakeyheads and other lures in cover with this rod seeing as it's a MH.

EDIT: I should have added co-polymer to this list as well.

EDIT 2: SPINNING GEAR ONLY

Spinning or baitcasting?

Strictly spinning! I'll add that to the post.

Sorry!

12lb fluoro is too heavy for a spinning reel, if you spooled up it might start jumping off the spool like incorrectly spooled mono since it's a stiff line.  I think 15lb braid would work the best for you, using a fluoro leader depending on the application.  I use PowerPro and Sufix 832 on all my spinning gear, both work fine though PowerPro isn't as smooth as some of the other braided lines out there.

When you say it's too heavy, are you saying that it won't cast as far either?

When dealing with cover situations, I'd go 30# braid and then add a leader as necessary if needed. Smackdown if you're ok with the price, it's the thinnest and most supple I've used and will likely behave the best on spinning gear.

I'm just getting into it so i'll start out cheaper and if i love it, i'lll move up haha

PowerPro, what's the best color? Yellow or Green?

Also, for what uses will I need a leader?

Lastly, i have no idea what this knot is called but when I tie my mono, I pinch the line and twist and run the end through the small loop near the lure and then pull that tight and sinch the line down tight. Will that work on braid?

Use a leader at all times with spinning in freshwater strictly due to visibility reasons. As for the price of Smackdown, a $30 spool will last you 4 years I you use leader and tie good leader knots. That knot will not work for braid, its called a clinch. A great knot for monofilaments, I use it myself, but braids slickness will cause the knot to slip. Tie a double uni from braid to leader, and then clinch from leader to lure.

On a spinning rod I would use 10-15lb Sufix 832 braid with a 6-8lb FC Sniper leader

If the Flouro i'm using is too heavy, does that mean I won't cast as far?

You wont cast as far, you will get a lot of line twists, and the line will be hard to manage all together.

It is the diameter of the 12lb that is too large for most spinning gear.  For instance, that line on a 2500/30 size reel will be unmanageable.  If you want to try FC, I would go with 6lb or 8lb Trilene XL 100% FC or Invizix.  Both have worked well for me.

In the end though, the Stren you have been using is pretty good stuff.

20 will work but I prefer 10-15lb

Awesome! So 150yds is 12.99 at bps. That's what I'm going in on! Also, what color should I get?

Let us know what you think of it and how it compares to the Stren you have been using.

Whatever you prefer. I like green for both monofilament and braid. Make sure you've got a good pair of scissors, and take the time to lean/tie good knots.

30# Samurai with 10-12# leader (as and when needed).

To the OP, based on the techniques you are throwing, although I have thrown braid for a while on a spinner, I have gravitated back to using Copoly lines for finesse type of techniques. 10lb youzuri to be exact. I treat the line with conditioner often and the line lasts me a long while. YZ has great abrasion resistance, and its a very strong limp line.

I still love braid do not misunderstand me, however I am learning that each type of line has there place and time, imho. If I were to return to braid for my spinning use, I would throw Power Pro 15-20lbs.

Thanks everybody! I can only purchase yozuri co-poly online right?

Also, any good scissors recommended?

I'm not sure where you can buy yozuri in-store. For a cutting tool I highly recommend the boomerang snips

Yozuri could be found in Walmart. As far as scissors. While you are at Walmart, walk over to the school supply section and get a pair of Fiskar kid scissors. They work great for braid and other lines. Better yet. They run $2.

Calcutta pliers have really good line cutters. Sear right through braid without any fraying.
