Is there a way to add length to the end of a rod?  I have a Carrot Stix (split grip) 8' H with a fairly short handle.  I am looking for any way to add 5-8" to the end of the rod.  My only idea is to cut off the EVA foam on the bottom, and cutting about a foot/foot and a half section off of a baseball bat (really just the "grip" off the bat) then drilling out the bat, and epoxy it on.  It wouldn't be "clean" and maybe a little heavy, but I think it would look pretty cool.  Remember it's a swimbait rod so weight wouldn't be too big of an issue (or maybe it would).  Any ideas (creative or not), or is there a "professional" way to do it?

Proper way to extend it is with another piece of a rod. Either by inserting the new piece in the butt of the rod or by inserting the rod into the extension.

Since its a SB rod, it probably has a fairly large diameter blank so an extension inserted in the rod will probably work. Find a scrap rod with a OD that will fit in the end of the rod once you remove the butt grip. Make sure it will insert at least 4".

I extended a rod handle once. I cut off one inch from the end of the rod handle, then I drilled a hole in the end of the rod handle, then drilled the same size hole in the end of the piece I had cut from another rod handle. I cut a piece of aluminum round stock that would insert into each hole. Using epoxy glue in each hole I then inserted the rod into the holes and pushed the two handles together. Worked just fine.

Broken graphite golf clubs are supposed to work quite well too.

Do it the government way -- cut a section out of the middle and add it to the end

J Hovanec provides a good plan. Bob the butt.Glass Insert or oversert another piece of blank then reream or refit a matching piece of EVA.

Just curious, as you said this is a SB rod, how and what type of rear grip you'll be using after extending the rod?  I see you mention a baseball bat handle. Did you plan on tapering it down to a trim ring diameter and reducing the knob with a lathe?

With the baseball bat idea there would probably be a 1/2" to an 1" lip around the rod, which wouldn't be very pretty, but it wouldn't bother me too much (you could use a lathe to make a clean taper which would make it look way better).  I would consider keeping the knob, it might give it a cool look. 

 

But, I've pretty much dismissed that idea...for now.  I'm most likely going to use an old graphite shaft golf club (as someone suggested above).  I know from one random sport to the other, but bear with me.

 

Here's the new plan: it currently has a 10" handle I want it somewhere around 18".  It's a split grip so I'm going to cut the rear grip off leaving approximately 6-7", ream out the rod to the proper fitting if it's needed (I'll have to dry fit it a few times to get it just right).  In the mean time I'd cut the driver to the proper length, compensating for the 3-4" that will be fitted into the end of the rod.  Then paint the golf shaft, put a new Golf Pride grip on it then epoxy/clear coat it.  I also might stick a trim ring where the connection is, if I can salvage the one that's on the rear grip.

You could just use a Manley Adjust a Butt to extent the handle

If he is even thinking about it he already has the genetic disorder.  It's just been dormant.  

I mainly stick with making balsa crankbaits  and repainting lures, but I can tell the rod building is not too far away.
