Must Have Been A Law.

In my old magazines, 50's and 60's, almost every fishing article has the fishermen smoking a pipe. My theory is that they are all imitating Jason Lucas, who nearly always had a pipe in his mouth.

Don't know who Jason Lucas is but I've been smoking a pipe for about twentyfive years. Maybe I'm old school or as my kids and grandkids say, I'm just old.

The man is old school.

Not only are pipes out of fashion, so are stringers!

That's the man.

Jason Lucas quote:

A reader asked, "Don't you have to admit that fishing is cruelty to animals?"

And Jason's answer was, "No, ma'am. Every fish I catch comes in wagging its tail."

Last week I saw two kids on the bank smoking a pipe while I was in my boat, and about a half hour later Johnny Law was putting them in handcuffs. Must of been the wrong kind of pipe, or maybe it was the tobacco...

Yeah Hootie, I agree with you, "Must have been a law.....ng time ago" lol  :laugh5:

I wish I'd never taken up cigarettes. Used to be I'd enjoy a cigar while fishing, but since I quit cigarettes around 10-12 years ago, I've been afraid to pick up anything with tobacco in it.

Mark Trail rides again. Makes me...................... nah, I'm not allowed to say that.........

Good for you for quitting the cigarettes. . d**n hard thing to do..

I'm sure none of you recognize or have even heard of this gentleman.  But in 1938 in Washington State he started the first organized Bass club in the United States....The Western Bass Club.  His name was Ed T. Frederich...known locally as "Mr. Bass", and he was never seen without a pipe in his mouth.

I guess it makes a man look like a thoughtful, intelligent outdoorsman or conservationist. My dad kept on one the mantle so people would think he smoked it.

I quit smoking too. I can't smoke tobacco in any fashion either for fear that I'd go back to it.

I always smoke cigars while fishing.  Recently took up pipe smoking....but I haven't mastered fishing with a pipe.  Most of my pipes are too heavy to leave in my mouth for any length of time like I can with a cigar.

Lucas on Bass is a classic book every bass angler should read. Having an appreciation of where our sport came from and the techniques used before tournament bass will broaden your skills.

The magazine cover posted shows Jay fishing lake Mead in the early 50's, the lake had a big population of 10 lb NLMB during it's hay day.

I still use a modified 10' stringer, weighted with a 1 lb weight to keep giant bass alive without stressing them by putting the bass in a livewell. The stringer has SST sharp clips, clipped through the lower lip membrane doesn't harm the bass, they recover in the deeper cool water before releasing them.

I grew up reading Jason Lucas, the pipe didn't have any influence on me, his knowledge did.
