High School Bass In A Jon Boat?

Featured Replies

Hey guys just here wondering if its possible to fish like local high school bass tournaments in a Jon not that is just like a bass boat just not as fast me and my friend are looking to put together a club and we don't have a bigger boat but my Jon boat goes about 20-25 and has electronics all that stuff what's your opion.

how long is it? I doubt there's a rule that says "no jon boats allowed" but there could be length requirements. i'm pretty interested in this topic, being a high schooler, so some info on this would be interesting...

A lot of clubs and tournament trails have a horsepower minimum. I think most that I've looked up before required 25 horse power, or more. It also has to meet coast guard regulations so slapping a 25 on a 12 footer won't fly.

The high school club I am familiar with has their own jon boats with electric motors.

They use coolers with recirculating pumps for livewells.

For larger waters, their parents and volunteers provide more sofisticated craft, but if not enough are available, they use the jon boats and just don't go as far.

For BASS affiliated clubs, the kids are not allowed to run an outboard for a tournament.

The first bass club I was in all the boats were john boats .

Call a team with a school and ask them for your state regulations. You may need a boat with a steering wheel. I have seen kids in my state fish out of a jon boat. You also need a boater that I believe is at least 21 y/o.

I run a HS club out here in CALI. If your joining TBF/SAF then the only requirement is insurance and some who is 19+ and out of HS to drive. i.e. it is all team tournaments meaning 3 people on the boat.
