Lake Drawdown Waypoints

Featured Replies

One of my local lakes has been drawn down. I'm trying to walk around and mark some stumps and other structure. My question is: has anyone been successful using an iphone to record waypoints and import them to your boat electronics...accurately? I don't have any trouble with performing the steps but I can't get the accuracy I'm looking for. For example, I have marked a stump using Commander Compass iphone app. I imported it on my lowrance hds gen2. It didn't look like it was very accurate, so I went back out the next night and marked the same stump multiple times. The points are are not very close. They look to do be up to 20 feet off. The points in the picture were all marked while I was sitting on the stump. Is this a limitation within the app/phone? Would other apps or devices be more accurate or am I wasting my time? Should I spend my time taking pictures and then trying to find/mark the spots from the boat when the lake fills up again?

Thanks in advance for any info.

just use your iPhone to get you to the spot and make a new waypoint once you get to the spot.

The smartphone GPS is not accurate enough for what you want to do,.

I use a handheld GPS for that purpose. Currently I have the Lowance Endura Safari 42 channel receiver.

I also have a bluetooth GPS antenna that I pair with a tablet to do Sonar Charts Live mapping. I also use it to create and save trails when ATV riding. That brand is Dual with 65 channel receiver.

I have not tried with paired with my smartphone.

Garmin has a similar one.

Yeah, I'd never trust a phone for any amount of accuracy. I've seen many times, just how far they can be off.  Not a precision instrument.
