What Do I Need To Know About Big Steep Canyon Lakes That Are Deep And Big Smallmouth

Featured Replies

I'm looking for more information on lakes like this that are real rocky have bass 6 pounds + and healthy population of kokanee and a neutral and aggressive stocking trout population. It gets warm in the summer, alot of good night swimming but is over 400 feet deep and is 53 miles long that is filled with cold mountain run off. There is some really pigs in this lake. My question is if you are after some pig smallmouths how would you fish it looking for 6 plus pounders

With that depth i would be fishing a dropshot.  There is also a video i watched with a guy baicaly dropshotting a swimbait.  The depth your describing is way out of my comfort zone and i have little to help there.

Wow, 400 feet is a lot of water. I would fish down to 35 feet and use drop shot to cover the first drop off above that line.

I think I'd fish the time of year the smallies are in shallower water.  Catching them in 30+ feet, they probably die...

Frydog, what makes you say they would die? I catch smallies almost year round in 45+fow and I have never had one die. As long as you play them slowly and allow their air bladder to adjust and release them quickly, they will be fine. If ones air bladder does get inflated, just make sure you know how to fizz a fish. It is simple, and you can get a fizzing needle for less than $10. Learn how to do it online, it takes 5 mins and then you shouldn't have any problems

It's 400 feet deep but it is steep like 20 feet from the bank you can be 15 to 60 feet on the bottom then it drops into a deeper aybiss but most of it going to be like a steep hill and there tons of rock .walls
