rod repair question

I recently received a St. Croix glass cranking rod that used to belong to my brother. I know that it is not a high end rod, but my brother was killed in accident 10 years ago so the rod has value to me. The rod guides are missing inserts at the top and bottom. I can easily replace the top guide, but the other is more problematic. What do you guys recommend? Thanks

Kirby

you have to burn off that guide with the broken insert.  Then replace it with a new guide and rewrap the guide again.

Please don't heat the blank!  Go to your local tackle shop and ask who they us for repairs or if there is a custom builder locally that can do repairs.  Replacing a guide is easy if you know what you are doing...  and usually cost less than $15, parts and labor.

Thanks man. I don't know of any rod builders locally, but somewhere in the greater St. Louis/So. IL area there has to be a few custom guys. I will make a few calls. Any rod builders in the area reading this, PM me if you want to do this repair. Thanks again flechero 8-)

Oh man please don't use any heat on the rod...

Like flechero stated replacing the guide is easy if you have done it. If not look in your local yellow pages for Rod & Reel repair or even Custom rod builders. Get 'er done properly..

Wow just checked the tackleworks.org directory for rod builders in your area...

IL; none listed...

I just called the local bait and tackle shop. They will take care of it for me. I should have known they could do it. For a Mom and Pop store they do good job of stocking a wide range of stuff. I try to use them when I can. I don't mind paying a little extra to do business locally. Thanks guys. I appreciate the help.
