Titanium Coated Zirconia Line Guide Scratching The Line???

Featured Replies

I recently bought a reel that claims to have a titanium coated zirconia line guide but I noticed that when I reel  constantly puts "scratch' on the line (for lack of a better word). After a long cast reeling a crank bait, there is some "threads" of line in front of the guide. nothing too dramatic but is damaging the line. I have an other reel of the same brand and it does not damage the line like the more expensive one. Is there any quick fix before replacing the part? I have checked for burrs on the guide but I can't see any.

Get a qtip and run it around the guide. Cotton will get stuck to any abrasive edge

GREAT tip.

you may want to double check all the guides on that rod with the q-tip as well, perhaps one of the rod guides has a slight nick and those damaged threads are just collecting at the line guide?

GREAT tip.

very punny

The Op is asking about the level wind line guide on the reel, not rod guides.

My question is what reel? and what line?

Take a close look for grooves or rough edges on the line guide surfaces that contact the line.

Although the OP may think it's the reel, it could have been a rod guide that got damaged somehow and is causing the issue.  I wouldn't dismiss the rod so easily.

I've never had a reel with a damaged line guide.  Are you using a micro guide rod?  Good luck detecting the bad guide.  I'm betting it's the rod.  I've dealt with this a couple times and it makes a rod useless.  I fixed my with a dremel and some sandpaper.  Went from 500 grit to 1000 to 1500.  No frays in my line anymore.

I didn't want to mention the brand because last time one of my postings was lockdown by an administrator of the forums, according to him it was just a battle of brands.

The guides on the rod is a good tip, Im going to double check. The reel is a Lew's Tournament Elite, the line is monofilament Sufix Edge 10lb and the rod is a Shimano Sellus Crankbait rod.

Im blaming the lever wind line guide because is where I found the "little hairs" peeling of the line, plus is where I can hear the noise.

The line may be getting abraded and the fibers are just depositing at the line guide. If other line guide or any Rod guides are damaged it will be apparent running a cotton swab or ladies nylon stocking material over them.

Im going to replace the line , I have the exact same line (from the same spool) in a different reel, same brand and that one works just fine. I tried to upload a picture but the size of files the forum allows is ridiculously small (150 kb )I can't get the picture to upload, can't get it to compress that small neither

Clean the level wind guide with alcohol or a solvent to remove any debris and look at it with a magifying glass for any defects. Run a cotton Qtip around the inside surfaces, if it snags a fiber check it closely. Do the with every rod guide. Cracked guides are very hard to see.

Hope the new line solves your problem.

I bought two cheap Quantum Response micro rods last year on sale for $38/ea.  Just seemed decent for the price and I needed some beat up pond rods.  My cousin also bought one.  All 3 of them frayed line like h*ll.  No cracks in the guides that I detected, but a little bit of glue I had to sand and chip away.  I ended up putting a lot of time into them to get them right and put new quality micro tips on both of them.  They seem fine now, but I won't buy cheap micro guide rods anymore.

What kind of glue did you use to fix your guides? Or how you got them to work?

Didn't use glue. Took a dremel and a piece of the wood from a q-tip if you can find the q-tips with the wood. Taped fine sand paper around the wood and smoothed out the inside of all the guides with the dremel. That got rid of any of the rough areas. I think I started with 500grit and worked up to 1200grit. Anyway, it worked. I also put a higher quality Sic tip on it. You can use this same method to supertune the inside of a pinion gear. All is well now. Some of the eyes were too small so I had to roll up the sandpaper tight like a cigarette and manually sand away.
