Rods For Reels For What Types Of Lures

Featured Replies

I would like to know what rod length, power, and action to get for my reels to be able to to cover crankbaits, soft plastics, worms , Texas rigs, spinnerbaits, jigs, swim jigs, top water, frogs, and jerkbaits. Between all my setups. My reels:

1. Shimano Sahara 3000- Fenwick HMG 7' MH- Soft plastics, t rigs, jigs?

2. Shimano Sahara 3000- Rod?- Lure?

3. Pfluegar Presidential- Medium Mod- Crankbaits and others?

4. Abu Garcia 6.8.1- 6'9" MH- Lure?

5. Lews Speed Spool LFS 7.5.1- Rod?- Lure?

1) Sahara and HMG would be good for lighter reaction baits. MH is a stretch for soft plastics and trigs.

3) President and a M/F for trigs and shakeyheads

4) Abu 6.8 with a MH/F for spinnerbaits.

5) MH/XF with the Lews for jigs and plastics

**i only use spinning tackle for finesse presentations, so that's my $0.02

bait casting - slower ratios for moving baits with resistance, faster ratios to pick up slack line (jigs, t-rig) - I wouldn't go under 6:1 ratio unless I had a dedicated deep crank rod. I think a 7:1 or 7.5:1 ratio is a good ratio for an all-around setup as the baitcasting reel gears are getting more powerful.

longer rods generally give you more casting distance and move more line when lifted.

shorter rods are generally more accurate.

most of my rods are between 6.5 and 7 ft long.

the sahara with the MH fenwick hmg looks good for t-rig and jigs.

id use the other sahara 3000 for anything except moving baits >5/16oz. and that is only because I prefer baitcasting reels for heavier moving baits. its personal preference.

the abu combo looks good for spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, swim jigs, buzzbaits

the moderate action rod will be good for crankbaits that fall within its lure range.

I use more casting than spinning but the 3000 reel with the 7'MH-F HMG would be a worm and jig rod in spinning for sure. Take the same reel and pair it with a medium power, fast action rod for lighter, finesse style soft plastics like fluke jr.s 3" and 4" Senko style worms, shaky heads and tube jigs. The Pflueger President, is this a spinning or casting set up? I can't help with that not knowing the specifics. The Abu Garcia ? 6.8:1 I'm assuming is a casting reel with a 6'9" MH-F rod, that would be my all-purpose meaning jigs and worms along with spinnerbaits/chatterbaits/buzzbaits, pretty much any single hook type presentation. The Lews speed spool in the 7.5:1 I'd pair with a 7' to 7'3" MH-F rod for jigs and worms but you can also go 6'6" to 6.9" medium power, fast or mod-fast action rod for jerkbaits and topwaters as the reel speed would suit those techniques perfectly.
