Crankbait Tuning

Featured Replies

Ok can anyone explain the crankbait tuning in the right way to turn the eye with pliers?  I see YouTube vids and they say to turn it this way or that, but they do it so slightly you don't even see how it's done.  I know if it runs right you bend it left, and vice versa, but how do you "turn" the eye"?

1) Is it like a rudder where you hold the pliers parallel to the ground and move it left and right on a horizontal plane?

2) Is it like a see-saw where you hold the pliers facing downwards perpendicular to the ground and move it left and right towards the ground?

3) Is it where you just grab the eye on the opposite side of where it comes out of the lure and you "twist" the handle clockwise/counter-clockwise?

Like a rudder.  Grab the flat sides of the eye with the pliers and very slightly bend the entire eye left or right.

You're not screwing/unscrewing the eye, just bending it slightly to one side or the other.

I remember being told in high school shop class to "use the right tool for the job."   BPS sells a crank bait tuning tool that makes the whole process simple.   Much easier than using pliers.   $5 well spent.

The KVD splitring pliers from Wally World have a cutout on them for tuning also. I think they are like $10.
