Sea Robins

Featured Replies

I went saltwater fishing today with my friend. I caught 2 tiny lane snapper at first. But then, i thought i had gotten stuck on a rock in the water :(. Until the rock started moving!!! This thing literally made me think i had my first redfish on my ultra light 8lb test gear. I was so afraid that my rod or line was gonna snap. However, i noticed something odd. Whatever i had on was keeping to the bottom, i thought maybe i had a huge catfish or something but then....

I caught this 11.5in creature. What gave away its identify were the huge "wings" it had. I really wanted to catch an edible fish so i could teach my friend how to fillet a fish. He wanted to release it anyways mainly because we didn't know whether it was poisonuos or not. As a matter of fact i didn't want to touch that thing XD. I just got a quick measure, then held it over the water and popped the hook out of its mouth with my pliers.

So has anybody eaten sea robin? Are you still alive and if so how did it taste?

That thing fought like a tank though.

I really like Sea Robins, or gurnard as we call them. firm white dense flesh. Not much meat on them, but I really enjoy the ones I eat. Impressed that you had such a tussle from a 12" fish!

Not much good in my world except to strip the white belly off for flounder teasers

Well, I've sadly never caught a redfish or anything like that. So i may be overexaggerating. But ethier way it was definetly the strongest fish i've ever caught for it's size. And was definety an upgrade from my 5 inch lane snapper ;)

I remember the first time I caught one.  I was very leery about touching it, too.  I was pretty new to saltwater fishing and had no idea what it was, and they do look like something that might be hazardous somehow!  :)

Now, I think they're kind of pretty.

Tight lines,

Bob

Did you hear him croak? They make funny noises when out of water.
