Does It Make Sense To Undyed (White) Braid For Frogs/buzzbaits?

Featured Replies

It is often suggested that when fishing topwater in the evening or early morning it is best to use dark colored frogs or other lures, as light colored lures do not sillouette well against the pale twilight sky. Even in daytime, the surface still outshines everything else. Given that, I would imagine that fishing line that is on or just below the surface is least visible when clear or, in the case of braid, white.

Braided line is manufactured from clear fibers and is white when the strands are first woven together. Coloring dyes are added later and do not adhere well to the strands. That's why braided line gradually loses some color with use. The natural white braid is not as often sold as it is believed to be too visible to fish. That may be the case with braid that is fished below the surface.

However, I believe that white, undyed braid may be the ideal color for topwater applications. Any comments?

To be honest I throw a buzzbait with my spinnerbait rod which is braid but I wouldn't want white for spinnerbaits. As far as my top water rod I use that for poppers walk the dog type baits and it doubles as a jerkbait rod, but I use CXX on that one. I wouldn't want braid because it's too limp and the lure will run over the line while your working it which will be a royal PITA when it gets wrapped around a couple sets of trebels. All though I do agree it would be a lot less visible then the dark color.

Sounds right to me!

I highly doubt the fish ever see my line in the stuff I usually fish frogs in.

My short answer is no, it doesn't matter. When those fish are keyed in on frogs for example, braid color does not matter.

Experiment.

Use a clear line and a white braid in the same conditions at the same time and you will find out if it makes a difference.

Please let us know of your results.

Thanks.
