Reel Gearing

Featured Replies

I have a Lew's tourney pro left handed in 6.4:1 ratio. I really would love to change it to 8.1:1 or a High 7.x:1. Is it something I can change myself or is it something even a shop can do? And if so how much does it run? Its hard to find a 8:1 gear ratio in a left hand and I love the reel just hate the slow gear ratio.

Gears are very easy to swap. There are several excellent sources for gears readily accessible online, so I'll not recommend any single one. You'll likely have to call and tell them what you need; they generally know what interchange.

Being an Ambassadeur guy, I can't be much help with Lew's part numbers. DVT might know, though.

You need to purchase the main and pinion gear from a Lews tournament pro model TP1SHL. That'll make your reel 7:1:1 That's as good as you're going to get.

7.1:1 is better than 6.4! I'd imagine just call Lew's and order through them? Thanks for the replys

Yes, order the parts through Lews.

Yes, order the parts through Lews.

How would you go about swapping those out? Just curious.

Awesome thanks! I'm sure its very simple. I've had the reels all apart for cleaning and I don't know the technical name I always just called it main and secondary, but my guess is just switch out the two big gears (one big, one smaller) inside the reel.

The main gear is about the size of a 1/2 dollar. It slides down on the driveshaft. The pinion gear is about the size of a pencil eraser. It rides on the outside of the main gear. Both need swapped to change the gear ratio.

Sweet thanks for all the help!

Gears are directional so they need to specifically for a lefty. The gears from other models with the same frame and gear case will work. When a model with the gearing you want is available commercially it's almost always more cost effective to add or swap a reel out. If you decide to proceed contact me fit assistance.
