Squarebill

Featured Replies

Is it to cold for a squarebill crankbait,i'm south of Knoxville and north of Chattanooga about in the middle and gonna be fishing WattsBar Lake. Also what is a good LuckyCraft Squarebill they have one color i'd love to have of a Craw ?  GodBless & as always Thanks & have a safe Thanksgiving

While, I know nothing of TN's fishing.  That's all me and my boater could catch them on last Friday.  Craw colored was key Spring/Fall.  No jerkbaits or plastics.

Just reel slow and for us - they only bit 1 out of the 6 treble hooks so don't horse them in, play them out a little.

Good luck!

Matt

I just caught a nice river smallie in near-freezing water using a Live Target Baitball square bill.

I was fishing it by reeling and pausing, with some twitches thrown in.

I used to live in Rockwood,Tenn. which is on the shores of Watts Bar.As far as squarebills go,you can't beat the Bagley's small fry series cranks if you can find them.I used to catch many bass and some big ones on the shad &crawdad in this series. Also,Rapala fat raps were killer (silver /black).If you are determined to fish Lucky Craft check Tackle Warehouse on line.I'm sure you can find what you're looking for.

Still catching them on squarebills in KS with water temps in the high 40's.

I'm in PA and the water has now passed the square bill zone with temps in the mid to low 40s. I'll throw a square bill with the water around 47 degrees and up, especially where smallmouth are present but they become less effective as the water dips down to 45 and under. A good crank for cold water is the Rapala Shad rap,  I throw a #8 and a #7 when the water is in the low 50s and then go to the #5 when the water temp fall into the 40s, and I'll use it until the water gets below 40 degrees.
