making inline spinners need help again

Featured Replies

i know were to get the supplys now but i cant figure out how to make the metal wire loops that twist to close it. i want it to look like the company made lures were the circle is nice round and perfect. just cant seem to figure it out and sometimes i will bend too close the the bead that it will be a tight closure that the clevis wont spin.

also i found that the metal wire spiral things from notebooks looks to work for wire shafts for inline spinners the only con about them is they bend pretty easily and they are thicker than the stainless steel wires you can buy. whats your thaughts on this?

Check of Stamina aka lurepartsonline.com.

They will have everything you need from wire forms to a variety of blades and bodies.

Unless you are a machinist, it is probably far easier to buy the lure bodies.

It is easier if you have a pair of round nose of needle nose pliers and I prefer the former.

For this lure type, it is a little cheaper than buying store type. Enjoy! I make my own too and they have caught lots of fish.

Love making my own spinners!!!!!!!!!!!!  I've managed to find some really old Weller blades and it's great having a blade type that others don't have.

Body weights are really getting out of hand IMO, I had bought a few hundred of each style I like years ago adn I regret not buying some for all the years I didn't.

Jann's has a good selection, Hagens (you'll be buying in bulk here so if you have buddies go in on several types and trade them with each other).  Another way to go is Do-It now carries a mold for making spinner lure bodies you'll have to paint them but it's an option, the body style is like the rooster tails.

Making your own spinners is cheaper when you buy the parts in bulk.  You say you're fising in the rivers and snaggy areas you may want to switch to double hooks instead of trebles, you'll not only lose a lot less lures but you're hook rate should be the same I know mine is.

If you have any more questions jsut let us know we'll be glad to help

For spinner bodies I like to use the cylinder weights like Mojo Lures slip shot weights, 10/12 to a pack depending on size and should be readily available.

They look just like Rooster Tail bodies and you can paint them anyway you like.

islandbass i like your last pic of the bottom 2 spinners i like it plain and simple like a bullet body no beads french blade dressed hook but thats my liking i just like plain simple not too flashy and colorful but more natural and bland like alot of company made inline spinners. thanks for the post guys i will definatley start making some. rip off are inline spinner kits they cost 35 bucks for a not so great set i think but at least you get to make like 40 spinners but not enough variety or the body shape is not my liking style and looks.

Thanks! Actually that set of spinners got sent to Iraq a couple years ago for some of our troops serving back there.  I hope that they caught some Saddam Bass as they call them there.

Make them in whatever combinations and configurations you can imagine. As a rule of thumb, you want the blade to be at least as long as the body, if not a little longer. This is what a great inline spinner maker taught me.

Does anyone make their own spinner & buzz baits?

Get some of these to make the loops. Don't ask how I know about that website...

i have a pair of rond noses already but thanks anyways always good to hear from others

That is the right tool. I can't fathom what is preventing you from wrapping the wire other than practice.

As a rule of thumb, the lighter the gauge of the wire, the easy it will be to turn or wrap it.  Try starting out with .024 or 0.31 wire. If you still have trouble or it hurts your fingers, you simply have sissified fingers that just need to toughened up just as those who learn to play guitar.  ;D Seriously, it just takes time and practice. 8-)

IMHO notebook wire would be far to bendable to make a good inline spinner. Think about it-- you would be re-straitening it every few casts. Also... how to plan on procuring enough wire for building? Buying notebooks on back to school sales and ripping out the wire?  ;D ;D ;D

i just use the wire from old alomost empty notebooks from school and from people with empth notebooks i take it out and stand in front of a metal pole fence in my yard and hold both ends of the wire and start streching it and straightining it with the pole like if i was polishing someones shoe. gets nice and curled with no bends in the wire but it is bendy tho i will try some out on the water thats the one test i have not tried yet.

Rookie,

I'm with Mattin on this.  If you are unable to buy the wire designed for making inline spinners, you can in a pinch, use the same wire that is used to hang pictures.

That is what I used when I first wantedto "try" making inlines.  Like the spiral notebook wire, it will be very flexy and malleable but they will work until you can get some of the correct wire.

With this said, remember the adage the right tool or material for the job is always the ideal. I have landed 4 lb trout on that picture wire ;).
