Inward vs outward facing barbs for trebles.

Featured Replies

Pros or cons vs the two?  I feel like I only see the outward facing barbs on jerkbaits, but just curious.

Thanks

Makes no difference whatsoever ( a lot of Megabass lures come with Katsuage outbarb hooks ). What is important is that those hooks should be razor sharp

The first ancient bone curved hooks had out barbs,  hold into flesh better and harder to remove. The harder to remove, tearing of flesh design of out barbs, limits the use with catch and release bass anglers.

What I don't like is out barbs tend to nick your line and scratch up the rod and lure finish faster the inward barbed hooks.

I used the VMC Barbarian Outbarb hook on some jerkbaits for two seasons and I don't care for them too much. WRB is spot on with the assessment and to me the biggest thing is nicking line. I remember thinking that Megabass was on to something with the outbarbs so I got them and the one good thing is they seem to grab fish that just swiped at your bait, it was almost caught if it got close but I began only using them for the back hook as my line did end up nicked and they scratch the finish worse than regular hooks. In he end the benefit didn't outweigh the negative so I stopped using out barb hooks.

Got one of the out barbs stuck in my finger and I couldn't get it out. Doc says it was the worst he's ever dealt with. Stuck in the knuckle

At that moment I bought a Boga gripper and a great pair of pliers.
