Hello, 

Currently i have a 6'6 okuma celilo and penn fierce spinning  reel for Ultralight fishing. I have 6lb mono on it which works fine, not the best casting distance but i like the extra strength. I finally warmed up to the idea of tying on a leader, previously i didn't want it passing through my guides and i still wont do it on my baitcaster but the celilo is cheap enough i can always replace it easily. I know most people say knots passing thru the guides is no problem but im super picky about taking care of my equipment. 

 

So what diameter braid should i get, 10?15?.also what kind and size leader? 

Daiwa new "J" Braid #8 lb. or Power Pro #8 lb. braid with a 5' section of #4 lb. ~ #6 lb. mono or FC line joining the two with a Modified Albright (i.e. Crazy Alberto) knot . Tied properly , the knot will go through the guides just fine - just make sure not to reel the knot actually into the reel to prevent a snag / delay while casting which could cause the line to break ... What size fierce do you have? I have been eyeing the 1000 size in either the Fierce, Battle, or Conflict. I wish they made the spinfisher V that small (I really like the 4500 I have).

I think its the fierce 2000. Its okay im not that crazy about it but i got a good deal on it from Walmart. The celilo on the other hand was a pleasant surprise and only 35 bucks

I use very small fire line and have good results 

I'll have to try the fireline on a spinning reel. I use it on a couple of baitcast reels.

Otherwise, if I use braid on my small spinning reels I do well with Sufix.

Is this really an ultra-light setup? 10# or 15#? No way...

I'll throw my vote in for 3# PowerPro Microline. Wicked good stuff, especially in yellow. Use with either a 2#, 4# or at most a 6# leader. If 3# scares you, you can go with either the 4# or 5#, also PP. I use only 3#, 5# or 8# PP for nearly all my finesse fishing.

Does PowerPro still make microcline?  I have not been able to find it lately.

10# will be just fine.... it's the equivalent of 2lb mono which i'd definitely consider ultralight line.

I currently use 10# power pro moss green on my ultralight setups.  No leaders either.  My buddy uses 4# stren and we couldnt tell a diffrence in amount of bites using same color lures.  Even in gin clear creeks.  So its worth a shot to try the braid without a leader first. 

I have 8# pp on my UL. Usually with a 4 or 6 lb fluoro leader.

I'd agree, generally; however since he's considering 
tying on a leader, I don't see a problem with 10#
Power Pro. For me, the leader is the UL portion of
the setup. For that, I'd go from 2-4# leader.

Ultra lite isn't light...it's u l t r a light....think 1lb to 4 lb mono and braid with equal diameter.

My little sticks usually have 6# fireline or 4# fluoro. Hasn't failed me yet.

Yeah, it really comes down to what Tom stated, whether he is truly using ultralight gear and baits or just light or ML fishing. If he is using 1/16-1/64-oz. jigs, etc. or similar tiny baits, then 3# PP will fish circles around 10# PP (.006" dia.) when it comes to casting distance, as well as bait control and feel in deeper water regardless of leader. 3# PP microline is about .0034" on the micrometer, or about 8X tippet material in fly fishing, which is about 1.75 lb. actual breaking strength equivalent nylon/fluoro., about half the diameter of 10# PP. For comparison, 2# Trilene XL is .005" in diameter. If he's fishing 1/8-oz stuff, then much less of a deal with the 10# PP.

PP in such low diameters. Leaders, I don't fish
below 4# anymore these days, but I used to.

I need to break out my long poles and do some
no-reel fishing soon. 2# test after panfish.  

Can anyone tell me where I can buy this 4# PowerPro?

Me, too I bought an 11'8" (3.6m) Daiwa carbon fiber long pole to fish panfish this year. Instructions said to not use any line heavier than 5 lb breaking strain with the rod - big fun!

I bought my 12' 98% graphite (?) from allfishingbuy.com
and have used it with great success over the years for 
pannies up to 2 pound bass. Unbelievably fun!

My sons also use Walmart-bought 10-20' long poles for 
fun, as well. We've caught a ton of fish from pan-cat-bass
on them, not to mention turtles.

Looks like you'll have to look around a bit. I see it is still listed on the PowerPro website, but the place I've always bought it from (American Legacy) is showing 'out of stock.' Some looks to be available on Ebay. As a fallback, you can go with the 5 lb. PP and be fine. Easy to find it at most major retailers. It's a great crossover line between panfish and bass. I use it a bunch for Ned rigging with 6 and 8 pound leaders without any issues. I just like playing with the extremes in tackle to see what I can get away with. A great learning experience.

I currently have 4 UL rigs set up with 2# test Fireline Crystal for the main line, each with a 4' - 5' leader of 4# test fluorocarbon, connected with the Alberto knot. I do not like the braided PP because of the sound it makes when retrieving. The fused construction of the Fireline is much smoother and quieter. Been using these UL rigs for panfish for many, many years, and this is just what I like best. I've taken some pretty large fish with them as well, including LM bass and northern pike. Consistently reliable - in my opinion anyway.

Give Gliss a try. It's on my ultralight finesse rig and it's incredible. It's insanely thin, like spider silk. I think *** has a small review on it, but A-Jay did a great write up on here about it. Search for it and you'll see what he had to say.

I've seen ads for it- I may have to try sometime.

1-4 lb mono equivalent in diameter is 8-15lb braid 

what equivalent diameter size leader would you be tying with 3-5lb braid?  do they make a 1/4lb mono?

PowerPro Braided Spectra Fiber Micro Filament Line - 100-150 Yards.  Bass Pro has this in 5lb.
