dobyns champion sensitivity?

Featured Replies

are the champion rods sensitive compared to say, a powell max?. ive been using a powell max 683 for texas rigs the past cpl yrs and even tho its doin the job perfectly was considering upgrading. i can get a deal on a 684 champion and was wondering will i see a noticeable increase in sensitivity?

It may be worth adding that Dobyns is redoing some of their rods this year. The Extreme saw a move to Fuji guides and a better blank. The Champions are getting Fuji guides too but I am not sure about a blank change. If you are referring to the older Champions I am not sure how they will stack up against the Powell Max rods.

I used to fish jigs and worms on the Savvy which many refer to as dead. I didn't think the blank was bad at all for feel though I have upgraded since.

The endurance series is better than the max series. I've owned them both. Still have 1 of each. The max 3d is supposed to be a touch better than the endurance series. The endurance is still my favorite rod $150 and below. Even better than some $180-200 rods I've owned.

Head to head with the champion series I'd give the Dobyns a slight nod over the endurance. It's just a bit better feeling. Mainly due to it being lighter. Definitely a larger improvement over the max though. Just be aware that a 4 power champion is like a 3 power Powell. Since you enjoy your max already and it's been said the 3d max is an even better rod maybe look into one of them. I think they're also being discounted right now.

only thing about the max 3D is it uses the sk2 reel seat.  not a fan at all.    someone beat me to the dobyns lol

I gotcha... I never even noticed that. My Phenix recon 2 has that seat on it, and it's not terrible but I prefer the plain old fuji ecsm.

Not sure of your budget but I have a DX 704 I'd part with.

Shelton's Clothing and Outdoors has a lot of Powell Max and Max 3Ds for $100. They even have a couple Endurance for the same price, one of them being the 674. Might want to get one of those, it's a great rod.
