Dobynn's Champion v St. Croix Avid

Featured Replies

Which Dobyn's Champion is most comparable to a 7' MH/F St. Croix Avid. A 703c or something else. By comparable I am asking about tip sensitivity and backbone. I like the Avid's but have always wanted  to try a Dobyn's. I have a coupon that put's them at the same price, and would like to get a Dobyn's. I will be using the rod for Rage rig's, and maybe a 1/4 oz jig, but mostly Rage rig with a 1/4 oz stroker hook. Thanks for the help.

704 hands down. If you are only fishing 1/4oz and in little to moderate cover, I would recommend the 703. 704 would be most comparable to St. Croix's MH.

Yes, 704c is about the same as he Avid but I'd recommend a 703 for your application.

I'll have to agree with both comments! I've been wanting to pull the trigger on a Champion for quite sometime at a local dealer but I'm use to St.Croix rods that are pretty much tip heavy rods. Champions are extremely "soft tip" rods which is a positive for sensitivity that I'm not use too like St.Croix"s but the backbone is definitely there in both rods for sure! I agree 703C would be the better fit for your application! If I were you I would definitely try to get your hands on a Champion before you buy one because IMO their totally 2 different beast! Both great rods for sure but I've only fish with the Avids & only handle the Champions in store! I ended up with the cheaper "Fury" because it was more tip heavy like St.Croix rods I usually fish with :) Personnel Preference trupp30!

The Dobyn's hands down.  Way better rod if you're getting them at the same price point. The only avid rods I like are their crankbait series and in their spinning rods ML through Ultra light. A

i've had both, still have some champions.  i would opt for the champion over the avid, everyday.

I have the same Avid rod, and a 704 as well.  The 704 is the most comparable, and although the Avid is a great rod, the 704 balances a heckuva lot better too.

I actually find the 7 MH/F Avid to be more sensitive but the 704C Champion to have better balance. I wish I could marry the two and make it perfect.

Anyways I agree with what was said, get the 703C for your application. 1/4 oz won't load well on the 704 to cast them far as I find it too stiff for that weight, despite what the factory specs say. For me, I like 3/8 - 1/2 oz on my 704.
