braid

Featured Replies

hey guys.  up until this point i have only used braid on one of my setups for thick weeds.  it was 50lb moss green bps brand.  i had it backed with mono and used a three foot flouro leader.  i bought two spools this winter and i want to expand my use of it.  i bought another 50lb spool in moss green and a hi vis yellow spool in 15lb that i want to use on my spinning reel.  i switched and both spools are spiderwire.  my question is this, how to you guys load it up on your line?  do you all use backing on your setups, both bc and spinning?  any specifics on how you guys do it would be appreciated. i also watched a vid of amart and he said he backs his flouro with braid which sounded odd to me.  in it he said he gets another 20 yds on his cast with it and it also eliminated a lot of his backlashes.  has anyone tried this application of it?  thanks guys, curious to hear what you all do.

I always back my reels with mono before spooling braid. I know some companies now offer spools that don't require it, but you only use the first 50yrd. of line so why fill the entire spool with braid?

I could see getting a little extra distance using braid, which is slick, over fluoro.  I can't see any benefit to backing fluoro with braid.

I use mono backing when using braid on both casting & spinning gear.

I use 1/4 spool of mono then top off with the braid.

Once there is a need, I end for end the braid down to the mono to use the fresh braid underneath.

I do not use Mr. Martins braid for backing deal.  Don't know if it works or not. Don't care.

Results indicate that my casting distance is effective now so there's no need.

I believe Martin's theory is that the braid backing makes the "center core" of a baitcasters spool lighter (which he believes leads to longer casts). Makes sense, more weight on the outside of the object that is spinning should generally allow the spool to maintain spinning speed longer. Never tried it. If I am using backing I use old monofilament (which is inexpensive).

I use a mono backing to. Never have a problem. I also flip the line, Its brand new under there.

I use mono backing on all my spinning reels, but on my baitcasting reels I just go straight braid with tape on the spool to prevent slipping.
