Best Wood and where to get it?

Featured Replies

I've been tinkering with a top water plug that was very successful last season.  I was using pine dowels from cheapo depot yet,  Poplar seems to be the better choice.  I'm wondering where I can purchase it.

Thanks in advance for your help. :)

Home Depot has poplar in the trim section. They have 3/4 & 5/4 stock.

Jigfishn10 = man without a club.. :) ;D

I didn't know you were into prop baits. My son asked me to make him one that he found in a BPS mag. I just finished it last weekend. The look on his face was priceless.

I hope you and your family have a great hoilday season!

I know the Home Depot near me has poplar dowels as well as the hardwood ones.

Thank you! For now I'm going to give Stamina's Basswood Musky sticks a try until I get a mini lathe. I'll have less to hand cut and carve this way and get plenty of practice in the mean time.

And if you are a Vet ask for their 10% discount.  :)

i have used a lot of different wood to build lures  Seems like i have good luck with cedar wood  simi - hard , easy to work and has the weight , a dense wood.   Dont care if its red or white cedar. Cuts great on band saw , carves great, and sands real good, and takes createx paint well
