What bait caster should I start with

Featured Replies

I am going to bass pro shops tommorow and plan on buying my first bait caster. Any tips on which one to get?

How much money ya bringing? That might help give you a few suggestions. And if you have $100 you might consider ordering a Daiwa Tatula 100 from Ebay.

I want to get the Johnny Morris Titanium 8 baitcaisting reel... Haven't every owned a bass pro reel, but it looks like a nice reel..

For starters I would recommend taking a look at the Lew's Speed Spool LFS Series Casting Reel. At $ 100.00 it won't break the bank in case you find that baitcasters are not for you. I have a couple of these and feel that they do handle and cast very well.

I second the Lew's Speed Spool LFS, the BPQ is a great reel as well.  I see many who favor the Shimano Citica too but personally have little experience with them.

If you watch the Flea Market in these forums you could get a nice $100 reel for around $50. I've bought a couple and have seen others. For one to start and see if you even like them that would be a safer bet.

I 3rd the LFS!  But they can be had for $80 on Amazon.  The Carbonlite (if it's still $99) is a good buy too.

^ X2, exactly what I would have said.  Lew's are a nice starter reel, try to find one with the ACB casting system if you can.  I think it actually   defies gravity.  yes, it is that good.

Get the new shimano caenan you will learn a baitcaster quickly with shimano.

Figure out if you want right or left hand retrieve!   I'm a righty who came from spinning gear (left hand retrieve) and could not get used to right hand baitcasters. Picked up a cheap left hand Diawa Laguna for $30 at Gander Mtn and I'm hooked (I think :) ).

I went with the lews tournament MB no complaints so far!

Daiwa Tatula 100 is better :D

All kidding aside, this is what I started with and now I have 10 baitcasters in my inventory.  Great price, Great Castability, Easy Castability, Decent quality, and one of the big 3 brand names.

I went with the lews because it was a great combo! I got an 80 dollar bass pro shop rod and a 130 dollar reel for 160
