Whats the best way to clean off the residual coating from the rod with a broken guide. Actually the guide is fine, the threads broke and I need to repair it.

1. Lightly heat the wrap with a hair dryer.

2. Using a single edge razor slice the coating/threads just under the guide foot.

3. lightly heat again, and twist the guide (wrap/coating should peel easily) off.

4. using the same razor blade lightly scrap the old coating off.

5. using a ultra fine (foam) sanding pad (2500gr), carefully clean up the blank area and make ready for the placement/re-wrap and finish coat of the guide.

Tight Wraps!

The only thing I'd add is to be sure and keep the blade perpendicular to the blank when scraping. This helps avoid accidentally cutting into the blank.

I would suggest not using the razor blade between the guide and the blank.  Just to be safe.

Use the hair dryer like stated above.  Use the razor blade to cut thru the epoxy and thread on the top part of the guide foot. So if you go to deep the guide foot will stop the razor blade from contacting the blank.

Once you get the thread cut apply a little more heat and then grab the thread and pull.  The thread should pull off.  I usually let the rod spin around as the thread comes unraveled.  I hope you understand....

Then do as stated above.

Razor blades and graphite do not mix well.
