thoughts on spinning reels

Featured Replies

I thinking of getting a new spinning reel. It's between

-revo sx 30 size

-orra sx 30 size, but new or older model

Just wondering your guys opinions. That size too big? Mixed reviews on the orras. Good reviews on the revo. Does the orras perform well ?

for spinning reels, you want to use the biggest spool size you are comfortable with, because it helps reduce line twist and memory.

Yea that's what I was going for.

I haven't fished the Orra so can't help you there. I have fished the Revo and felt that it was just okay. At that price point I would opt for the Pfleuger Supreme XL.

So many guys are very concerned with having the lightest equipment they can find but then go buy large reels that weigh more than the smaller reels. I tend to go small with my spinning reels. It is true that the large spools slow down the amount of line twist you get, but I use nothing but braid so the line twist issue is not as big a problem.

Don't know about today's spinning reels (all but one of mine being older), but larger reels often place the line far enough away to make it hard for the finger of the rod hand to pick up the line in preparation for the next cast.  The primary reason why I decided to try b/c reels a few years ago.  I didn't like having to place the line on my finger before opening the bail with my left hand on the bass size reel I was using at that time.  But, yeah, a larger spool does help with line twist when using a non-braid.

i have the Orra and it works for me
