Im gonna get this blank to build for my drop shot rod.  How would you guys dress it out??

Guides: Alconite ,Torzite

Reel Seat : Aero ( this is already purchased)

Rear grip: Cork, Carbon, Split

Thread color: ??

Or should I go with a least expensive set-up so I get two rods one for drop shot and one for shakey head??

This is my my fourth build and all the input will be greatly appreciated.  This set-up will probably get used the most since its my favorite style to fish.. Very excited to get it going because I will be headed to Dale hollow soon for some smallies.  thanks again

 

While Alconites are the best bang for the buck, they would be like putting hubcaps on a Cadillac.  I'd go with TiSic.  

I'd do a natural cork split Tennessee and save the Aero for another build.

Thread color.....I really like to make the thread disappear on those SCV blanks, both the green and the blue green flip.  For the green,  I'd just do a green nylon wrap that closely matches the blank.  No CP applied.  It will go somewhat transparent and you will see the guide feet.

Does Mudhole have the Tennessee grips?

Don't know. They have the rings.  If they have a premade one, the rings will fit too loose and your reel will want to fall off.  It's best to turn it yourself so you can make the rings fit snug on the grip.

I dont have any equioment to do that...what all do you need to turn cork??

You actually can make your own lathe from a hand drill.

thanks for the info Havanec... I probably will have to hold off because I dont have any of that equipment right now and I have to get the blank and accesories

Best bet is a lathe.  That can get quite expensive tho.  This is a nice alternative.  You can pick up a cheap hand drill and this.

Then you need some mandrels to put the cork on.  A Stanley Sure Form file, a flat file and some sandpaper.

I had a ds Rod with a TN handle of Kevlar with slip rings. Like it s lot. The Torzite guides are nice but very expensive. I concur with using wraps that will blend in. 

Does the kevlar tubing come with the slip rings?

Drill lathe is the way to go. 

your looking at about 30-35 bucks right there.

I ordered them separately. The tube specs give the OD and I thing the ring part number. 

If you do a drill lathe use 3/8 or better Rod for mandrel and be sure the bearings in the drill chuck are good. A little wobble makes turning miserable.

Whats the advantage of the Tennessee grip, the weight?

The ability to position the reel anywhere along the grip.  Plus, it's more comfortable than most reel seats due to its larger diameter.
