Rod and line setup for jig head

Featured Replies

Hey guys, I have found out that skirted jig heads with a crawdad trailer work really well in the lake I fish at in Omaha, Nebraska. I have a baitcaster reel, but I do not have a good rod whatsoever.

I was wondering what rod and line I should be using?

I was thinking a 7 foot medium heavy, fast action graphite rod?

I use about a 1/4 ounce to 1/2 ounce skirted jig head with a trailer on it. I also use a Texas rigged worm in the middle of the summer.

I am not looking to spend a lot of money so if you have a cheaper recommendation for a reel that'd be great, however, hit me with whatever you guys have. I'll listen to anything.

Right now I'm thinking possibly of the Shimano Selllus casting rod SUC72MH or SUCX72MH

A 7 foot MH/F rod sounds just about right to me!  If you give us your rod budget it would be easier to make specific manufacturer/model recommendations.

I throw a 1/4oz on a 7'M F quantum tour rod with a lews reel and 14# fluoro.

I throw a 3/8-1/2 on a 7'MH F vertias with a lews reels and 17# fluoro, or 50# braid depending on structure.

I stick to a medium action rod for 1/4 and 3/8 jigs. I find you need a sensitive rod for jigs that size too. I'd try to get the most for your buck.
