8.1:1 gear ratios?

Featured Replies

My last 3 reel purchases were all 8:1 ratio.

One for dragging football jigs and one for topwater. With these two my main objective is picking up slack line.

The third one may be a little unorthodox but it's actually for crankbaits. Mostly  shallow water square bills and wake baits. I want to be able to burn them when necessary and figure I can slow down when needed. Haven't put it to the test on the water yet though.

If my Chronarch 50e came in 8.1:1, I'd have bought
it without hesitation. As it stands, I upgraded mine to
7.0:1! I love fast baitcasters. I slow my retrieve for
other techniques. But when I want my line back for
another cast, I want it NOW, not at 5.4:1, LOL :)

Aaron Martin has a great youtube video on why he uses the Metanium 8.5's for everything and 7.2 for crankbaits. That's the way I'm going, made sense to me. Also like everything in life I think it personal preference and what works best for you.

i have two high speed reels, i have a shimano Metanium 8:5:1 and the *** *** in 8:1 i use both of these reels for many different things. i Enjoy throwing crank baits, jigs, t-rigs, and my favorite things to use them for are topwater and jerbaits. i like to have a fast gear ratio to be able to catch up to the fish and reel up slack
