papadew
Couldn't figure out where to post this ??? but does anyone sell a "Cliff's Notes" or GPS for Dummies. I've admittedly not tried hard, but it's hard to drive and fiddle with the eTrex. Instruction manual confused me (so does a lot of things). I'm old school, but don't want to get lost @ nite on new lakes. It ain't Alzheimer's YET, just Old Timer's/ Papa

papadew
Thanks Bud in Oregon. Like me here in the Blue Ridge Mtns, you're in some wild territory. GPS can save your life here, and Lake Norman, NC being the "inland sea" it's gonna save lots of lost fishing time. Thanks for your help, Papa
Bud_in_OR
Ain't no thing Papa. These youngsters that were raised with a computer or GPS in their teeth don't understand when we, who fished for forty years, or so, without them don't quite compute....as it were. papadew
Now all's I gotta figure out is whether to buy the $89 CD for the eTrex Legend and if I'll have to pay another $89 for the "unlock" code online. Anyone know if this is the way this works? At these prices, I figure it might be better to just be lost most of the time :-/Papa
squid
Well papadew, if you find the GPS for Dummies, please inform me too. But I am hoping for something at a lot less of a price myself....lol
Bud_in_OR
Hey Papa, Whatever you do, stick with it until you learn how. You'll never go back to map and compass. Start with the easy stuff. I'm talking 'saving a waypoint'(a one button shot), 'naming it'(if you like) and using 'go-to'(another one button shot) to get back to it. Learn how to follow the 'track' on the screen. Don't get tied up in 'routes' until you get the easy stuff down. You do not need a CD. The E-Trex Legend , Vista and standard 'E-Trex' series have an instructional video that is available at Cabela's for $9.99. Try to wait until you go through the instructional video before worrying about adding to your problems with a 'CD'. I hope this helps. Good luck. papadew
Good idea Bud. Even the GPS nuts site is a challenge. A video might be the thing. Old dogs/new tricks. Maybe my 5 yr old grandson could show me how. He can use a PC better'n me. Papa

papadew
My brain was trained by my dad & grandad to look for certain signs, to frequently check behind you for prominent features, etc. I can honestly say I've never been lost, even slightly. Even in the years in the military. But I wish I still had the 512 > RAM I had THEN. Me thinks I'm @ 64K and need my hard drive defragged badly!! Waiting on the instructional video from Cabela's (along with some DT 6 and 10's and YUM Sooie's). Creature baits are the new hot bait for me locally. Oilpig
I'm a college student getting a degree in geology. Between the amount of time I spend in the backcountry doing research and all the time I spend hunting/fishing, I've gotten pretty good with my GPS unit. I've also taken a few college classes that have been a huge help in understanding GPS and any spatial data in more detail. Ok, that being said...that gpsnuts website really ain't worth a hoot. If you don't know anything about GPS, that website ain't the most user-friendly place to go find out about it. Generally the user manuals do an ok job of explaining basic operation. If you're just looking to use the GPS to make a track of where you've been (so you don't get lost), you don't need to know anything but how to turn one on. The only way to really learn is to just go out and use it. Once you start wanting to enter your own waypoints from fishing maps, you need to know a little more about how that data is collected and managed. I'm always happy to help my fellow outdoorsmen with stuff like this. If you ever have any questions, you can feel free to email me at stevewelch2002@hotmail.com Good luck with your new toys. papadew
Steve........You DID read the topic of this thread didn't you? When I say "dummy" I mean DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMMEEEEEEEEE! (Thanks to Ron White fer that one) I'll be shooting you an e-mail soon. Had a death in the family this morning, so it will be a few days. And THANKs for the offer! Oilpig
LOL, I ain't skeered of no dummies! 8) One word of advice though...if you ask for help you gotta be honest with your questions. I gotta know exactly where to start. Sounds like we'll be starting from square one here which is probably a darn good place to start with most things instead of acting like we know more than we do. I look forward to your questions Papa, and from any of the rest of you too. once you learn some of the details to GPS data you can really do a lot of fun stuff with it. ;D
Bud_in_OR
Hey Papa and Oilpig, Could you post here on the forum (instead of e-mail) so we might all benefit? Thanks, Bud

Oilpig
"We got a little convoy, truckin' through the night. Yeah, we got a little convoy, ain't she a beautiful sight. We're gonna roll this convoy, truckin' it all the way. "We're gonna roll this convoy across the USA....CONVOY!" However we gotta do it fellas, I'm up for it. Let the questions roll. Do we wanna start a new thread for questions and answers?
