Swimbait in muddy water

Featured Replies

Hello. I am new to this forum and a MA fisherman. I am just starting out on the swimbait craze and using a 6" savage gear swimbait but have had no luck at all. Most of the water I fish is usually pretty murky. Any advice?

What lakes are you fishing? If your fishing murky water I would suggest some bait that has a heavy thumping and great water displacement.

How murky is the water?  I usually fish my swimbaits in clearer water maybe 5 feet or more visibility.

Right now up until June there is about 2-3 feet of visibility. Once the summer gets here all the boats usually turn up the muck on the bottom and becomes very muddy. I do get perch and other bait fish following the swimbait to the boat but that's about it. Should I just stick with what I know until fishing a clear Lake

To me a fish will eat a swimbait because it can see it as a large easy meal. I have caught plenty of fish on swimbaits in relatively stained water. It does take confidence. Once you catch one fish your confidence with the bait will exponentially increase.

The savage gear swimbaits don't move a ton of water. The Hudd 68 is a great 6 inch swimbait with a hard thumping tail.

Thanks a lot I will have to give the hudd a try. Hopefully can get out to some lakes with clear water to give it the real test

Wakebaits are good in muddy water when the fish are really shallow. I have a floating hardgill that I have caught fish on in very muddy water. Just gotta fish it close to the bank or tight to cover.
