St. Croix avid x

Featured Replies

Should i get the medium heavy fast action for versatality or the medium fast action. I will be using trigs, cranks, jigs, topwater, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, chatterbaits.

It would depend on what weight spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, and jigs, etc. you are using. But....without knowing that, I would recommend the MF. I have the MLXF avid x and can comfortably handle up to 3/8 oz. I believe it is even rated to 1/2 oz, but that seems a bit overkill IMO.

From my experiences with St Croix and the first Avid (not the avid X) i'd definitely go with the Medium Fast

A MH Avid is equivalent to most other heavy power rods. If you live in an area with a lot of heavy vegetation in the water, that would be a good choice,  except for crankbaits.

Otherwise, a medium Avid would be a better choice.

That sounds alright to me, but it's your rod & reel.

Im going to spool it up with tatsu fluoro but idk if i should get 12lb or 15lb what would you put on the rod? Or maybe i might just get sunline snipe fc? What do you think

You can't go wrong with either of those in sure. I've never used tatsu but anyone that has says it's the best. I have some sniper that is great! It's a little thinner diameter too so consider that...

Only thing the fluoro won't be great for is the topwater techniques. Otherwise should be great!

In my opinion you need at least 2 separate rods to cover all the things you want to. Crankbaits don't go well with a medium heavy fast action rod, you want a moderate or moderate fast for those. The treble hooks on topwater will also cause you problems, you either have to go to a medium power or use a rod with a moderate fast action, but jigs, T-rigs, spinnerbaits and chatterbaits will be fine with a medium heavy, fast action rod.

If you must stick with just one rod then go for the medium.  It will be more versatile than the MH in that line.
