For my Calc class we had to do a final project of anything related to calculus. I chose to use our 3D printer to print a lure. I printed a spook lookalike, because of the simplicity of designing. If interested I'll include the math, I used to prove it would float before printed. Still awaiting the paint job, as all my school has is purple filament.

 

 

Math:

I used this function, as it mimicked the shape after revolved around the x axis- y=0.01x³ - 0.13x² + 0.51x + 0.14

Then rotated around the axis with this integration, from 0-7 

π ∫((0.01x³ - 0.13x² + 0.51x + 0.14)^2)=Volume

Volume=9.92cm^3

Now calculating the density from the mass given from the printing program

Mass 7.83 grams

So the density is .789g/cm^3

The density of water is 1g/cm^3 so this lure will float, and it does.

Ran wire through it, then sealed the holes.

I'm currently studying plastics engineering and for one of our projects we had to design and print a"chess piece". I did a small "replica" of round reel on a stand, I'd upload a picture if I had one. The piece was pretty small though so many of the finer details didn't print that well. 

 

Yours is pretty cool though. You can actually use it, I can't lol. We did a lot of that rotating a function around an axis and finding volume last semester too. Cool to see it put to practical use.

That's wicked cool, I am planning to go into engineering in college, got another year to go until then. Looking into mechanical or electrical.

I was on the edge between plastics and mechanical. I have a few friends in electrical right now.

Nice, if I may what college are you attending? as I'm looking at a few in Mass. WPI mostly. Before this thread gets closed for not being fishing enough, lol.

UMass Lowell. WPI is great but UMass Lowell has one of the best plastics programs in the country, which is one of the reasons I chose that field. 

i don't understand the math one bit man, but that's super cool!  the 3d printer is going to be revolutionary once enough people know how to apply it all.

Hahs, I barely do, Calc is a mountain of a subject. I agree, it's gonna change the world, and how we manufacture. Even medicine with the printers that can print in flesh.
